Χριστουγεννιάτικα Έθιμα: Το Πάντρεμα της Φωτιάς
Την παραμονή των Χριστουγέννων σε πολλά μέρη της Ελλάδας, και κυρίως σε χωριά της Έδεσσας, «πάντρευαν» τη φωτιά. Ένα ξύλο κομμένο από δέντρο με αρσενικό όνομα (π.χ. πλάτανος) που συμβόλιζε το νοικοκύρη κι ένα κομμένο από θηλυκό δέντρο (π.χ. κερασιά) ως σύμβολο της νοικοκυράς, τοποθετούνταν σταυρωμένα στο τζάκι.
Τότε ο νοικοκύρης, αφού άναβε τη φωτιά, τη «σταύρωνε» τρεις φορές κι έριχνε πάνω της κόκκινο κρασί και λάδι. Πολύ συχνά οι μεγαλύτεροι έδιναν στο παιδί της οικογένειας που θεωρούσαν τυχερό ένα μεγάλο ραβδί για να την αναδεύει λέγοντας τα λόγια: «Πουλιά, κατσίκια, αρνιά και γρόσια…» ως ευχή για μια παραγωγική νέα χρονιά. Επιχειρώντας να ερμηνεύσουν τον ήχο που προκαλούνταν από τα φλεγόμενα κλωνάρια, καθώς και τη φλόγα που δημιουργούνταν, οι γυναίκες έκαναν προβλέψεις για τη μελλοντική σοδειά και την ευτυχία της οικογένειας.
Σε ορισμένες περιοχές, μάλιστα, τα νέα παιδιά τοποθετούσαν το αντίστοιχο κλωνάρι (αρσενικό ή θηλυκό) στο τζάκι κι αφού παρατηρούσαν ποιο θα παραδοθεί πιο γρήγορα στις φλόγες, προέβλεπαν ποιος θα έχει τον πιο σύντομο γάμο.
